Rivet is a tax prep firm, built by technologists. Combining corporate tax, personal taxes, R&D credits, and bookkeeping in one firm, Rivet is designed to make tax season take as little of our client’s time as possible, without leaving tax savings on the table.

While we may have just gotten started, this certainly isn’t our first rodeo –

• Nick Abouzeid (cofounder & CEO) ran two growth teams at Ramp (the fastest growing SaaS company in history) and prev. ran marketing at MainStreet ($3M —> $15M ARR in 2 years).
• Kyle Christenson (cofounder & Head of Tax) was an auditor at the IRS for six years, after which he joined MainStreet to focus on their most complex claims

We're on Day 236 and just crossed $800k in revenue, already have a full book of tax clients for next tax season. We’re well-capitalized (>3 years of runway) after raising a $1.7M round from XYZ Ventures and 40+ executives from Ramp, Newfront, Stripe, Deel, & more.

About the product & the role

Rivet sits in between clients, CPAs, and tax engines like CCH and Intuit ProSeries.

Tax preparers (largely) don’t fill tax forms out by hand anymore. They certainly used to, but tools like CCH and Intuit ProSeries made that work obsolete. Instead, tax professionals today are very expensive data wranglers, organizing raw data into CSVs that tax engines can interpret.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to help us unify this massive (and ever-growing) set of unstructured client data. For every return, we create structured tasks for both clients and their tax preparers, guide & inform them with dashboards, and automate the manual data-wrangling. Our software helps and remain as close to invisible as possible for clients.

With an MVP built on top of Notion & Airtable and some elbow grease, we managed to work with 100+ clients last tax season. But as you can imagine, without proper automation we cannot easily scale beyond our current bandwidth.

This is where you come in. As founding engineer, you won’t just build product, you will also help define the fundamentals and culture for our engineering team for the next decade. The right candidate is looking for a mix of early-stage decision making & growth-related firefighting.

Here a few examples of first tasks you would be working on in the first 90 days.

• building “mods” for tax prep software like Drake Software that allows us to automate certain workflows for data entry. These products don’t have API surface and would require getting funky with the source.
• build time-saving automations and delightful moments that make clients giggle – like Ramp’s “forward from your personal email” feature. An example of this would be identifying clients who haven’t set up specific tax-saving strategies based on their prior tax returns
• integrate LLM models across our workflows, using the full breadth of data we have access to (Slack conversations, emails, Zoom transcripts with calls) as well as broader tax information to streamline our workflows & build delightful client experiences
